A disturbing discovery at a local discount shop has parents on high alert after Missouri authorities confirmed that fentanyl was found inside children’s toys. On Saturday, the Independence Police Department responded to Cargo Largo after staff noticed a suspicious white powder tucked into the packaging of a Barbie doll.
The store’s security team immediately flagged the substance, which field tests later confirmed was the lethal drug. Once the danger was identified, police worked alongside the retailer to track down five specific units that had already been sold to customers. By late Saturday evening, officers successfully recovered every contaminated box.
“There is no reason to believe compromised units were sent to other retailers and no injuries have been reported,” police stated, though they noted the investigation remains active.
While the immediate threat at this location appears to be over, the incident highlights the ongoing risks of contaminated inventory in the secondary retail market.
Authorities have not yet confirmed how the drugs ended up inside the factory sealed style packaging, but they are looking into the store’s supply chain to prevent further incidents.
Families who frequently shop at discount or liquidator outlets are encouraged to inspect all new toy purchases for any signs of tampering or unexpected residue before giving them to children.
