Fetty Wap is officially back and he is moving with a completely different level of focus. Following his January 8 release from a federal facility in Minnesota, the New Jersey artist is embracing a fresh perspective on his life and career.
During an interview with Rolling Stone the 1738 rapper reflected on how his time behind bars allowed him to shed his past and enter a new chapter. “I could say that whatever I lost when I went in, it was meant to be lost, and when I came out, I left it there. You know what I’m saying? I just feel different,” he shared.
For the platinum-selling artist, the transition back to society is about appreciating the smallest details that most people overlook. When asked about the first thing he did solely for himself, his answer was simple but profound. Take a shower with my shoes off,” Fetty replied. Explaining the reality of his recent years, he added, “I know it probably sounds crazy, but you have shower shoes when you’re in prison. It’s like stuff like that … but things that you wouldn’t normally think are … you know what I’m saying?”
This new sense of gratitude extends to how he manages his time and his fame. After his 2021 arrest at Rolling Loud for federal drug trafficking, Fetty used his sentence to lean into his faith and build physical and mental discipline. He notably transformed his physique during his stay. “I went to prison at like 140 pounds. I came home at like 225. It was a discipline for me to get there. I had it in my head like, ‘I want to see what I look like, like this,'” he said. Now, he is refusing to rush the process of being a celebrity again. “It’s like when you’re driving, or you’re speeding to get somewhere, you’re trying to race against time. I promised myself one thing this time: I’m just going to take my time through life now. Just really enjoy life,” he explained.
Beyond the music, the father of six is prioritizing his family and catching up on the years he missed. He is finding joy in the simple interactions with his children, from learning about their current interests to watching their digital lives unfold. “Roblox is crazy. They have a whole group chat [about] Roblox. I just sit back and watch,” he noted. He expressed a desire to see them thrive, whether in college or following his footsteps into music, but for now, he is happy learning their “new favorite colors, little things.”
As for his professional future, fans can expect new music shortly, but the vibe will be a departure from the “struggle” rap many might expect. Fetty is determined to keep the energy positive and upbeat. “We’re going to have fun. It’s going to make you feel good. It’s going to make you want to get dressed and go outside. Or if you’re already outside, it’s going to make you want to stay outside. We’re going to vibe,” he promised.
By focusing on making memories and enjoying the opportunities he still has, Fetty Wap is proving that his time away served as a true reset. “I feel new. I feel rehabilitated, in a sense. I just have this clear mindset where it’s like nothing’s really that important,” he concluded.
