A Southwest Airlines flight attendant is suing the airline, claiming two pilots set up a camera in a plane’s lavatory and livestreamed the video to an iPad in the cockpit. The allegations have not been proven in court.
According to a lawsuit first reported by the Arizona Republic, flight attendant Renee says that while she worked a flight between Phoenix and Pittsburgh, the captain, named Terry in the filing, asked her to cover for him in the cockpit while he used the restroom. Renee claims that while he was gone, an iPad mounted to the windshield showed a livestream from the lavatory.
Fox News reported that the suit claims the co-pilot, Ryan, grew nervous when she asked about the camera and said it was part of new, top secret security measures at the airline. Renee says she did not believe him and took a photo of the iPad with her phone.
The lawsuit says crew members reported the pilots and that both still fly for the airline. Renee claims she was told not to discuss the incident, and says she and her husband, who is also a flight attendant, were later monitored by managers in a threatening manner and faced more performance audits. She is also suing the airline for retaliation.
Southwest told the Arizona Republic that it does not use cameras in its planes’ washrooms and called the safety and security of its employees and customers its top priority. The airline had no other comment on the pending lawsuit. The reports did not include a response from the pilots.
