A Florida mother named Jamie was shot in the back while driving on March 8th, according to PEOPLE. Authorities said the shot was fired by her young son, who was in the back seat.
PEOPLE reports that Jamie had placed a loaded gun under the front seat of her car, and that it slid to the back as she drove. Investigators said the child unbuckled, picked up the gun, and later fired a single shot into the driver’s seat.
According to the report, detectives were considering a single misdemeanor charge against Jamie for allowing a child access to a firearm. That charge carries up to 180 days in jail upon conviction. No charge had been filed when this was reported. Florida’s child welfare agency has also opened its own investigation.
