The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) says a former Murray County detention center officer has been arrested on rape charges.
According to a GBI news release, Kirk, 28, of Acworth, was arrested on a Friday morning after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her from Thursday afternoon into Friday morning.
Records from the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council show Kirk worked as a jailer from March 2017 until he was fired for violating jail policies. Murray County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Jimmy Davenport said the violations included giving an inmate the wrong prescription medication, among other procedural issues.
Special Agent Greg Ramey of the state bureau said the scratches on Kirk’s chest and neck visible in his booking photo came from the woman fighting back, and that his eyes were swollen from an apparent struggle.
The investigation is ongoing. Kirk was being held in Murray County and was denied bond. According to the release, he is charged with rape, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated assault (family violence), criminal attempt to commit sodomy, false imprisonment and hindering an emergency call.
These are criminal charges, not convictions, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The GBI release did not include a response from Kirk.
