Gayle King is opening up about one of the most painful moments of her life, and the details are exactly as wild as people online think they are.

During her appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, the longtime broadcaster revealed she once walked into her home and caught her now ex-husband, William Bumpus, cheating with one of her close friends while their children were still toddlers inside the house.
“I came home and caught him,” King said plainly while recalling the moment everything changed.
According to King, the situation unfolded after a business trip was unexpectedly canceled, leading her to return home early. When she walked into the bedroom, she found her friend there wearing her bath towel.
“I can’t believe that you are here and that you are doing this,” King remembered telling the woman. “I thought we were friends!”
The CBS Mornings host explained that the humiliation only got worse after police arrived because she accidentally triggered the home alarm when she entered the house. King said officers recognized her from television and even asked for an autograph while she was trying to process the betrayal happening in real time.
“I wanted to say, ‘Could you take out the trash?’” she joked.
King said her immediate focus became protecting her children, Kirby and Will, and keeping the situation private. Still, she wanted answers. After discovering the affair, she told Bumpus she planned to call the other woman’s husband.
According to King, Bumpus begged her not to do it because “they have a good marriage.”
King fired back with a response that still has social media talking.
“They have a good marriage? The girl’s pajama bottoms are in my bed,” she recalled saying.
The first person King called afterward was Oprah Winfrey, who immediately recognized how serious the betrayal was.
“Oprah goes, ‘Let me get this straight. He left you there alone and went with her?’” King shared. “And she said, ‘Oh girl, you don’t even know how bad this is.’”
After initially hesitating, King finally called the woman’s husband, who reportedly tried convincing her she had “drawn the wrong conclusion.” That explanation ended quickly after King detailed exactly what she found in the bedroom.
“There are semen stains in my bed,” she told him before hanging up the phone.
King and Bumpus were married from 1982 until 1993 and share two children together. Years later, Bumpus publicly apologized for the affair, calling it a “life altering choice” that changed their family forever.
Today, King says the two remain cordial during family gatherings, though she still managed to slide in a little shade while discussing a recent christening appearance.
“He ain’t looking so good,” she joked.
