After weeks of rumors suggesting she might leave or get moved out of her role, Gayle King just made one thing clear. She is staying at CBS News.
The veteran journalist has reached a new agreement with the network that keeps her at the CBS Mornings desk for the foreseeable future. The deal settles months of questions about what her next move might be once her current contract ends in May.
King addressed the speculation directly.
“Rumors of my demise were inaccurate and greatly exaggerated,” she said in a statement, pushing back on reports that predicted her exit from the show.
Instead of leaving, King says she plans to keep building her work at the network she has long called home.
“CBS News is my longtime home, and I am committed to our mission. I’m excited about continuing at ‘CBS Mornings.’ As always, I’m open to new adventures here and ready to go. It took a minute, but we got there. And now that we are here, I am all in.”
Her decision arrives as CBS continues trying to strengthen its morning program. Recent Nielsen numbers show CBS Mornings drawing about 1.78 million viewers during the week ending March 27. Meanwhile, NBC’s Today brought in around 3.2 million viewers, and ABC’s Good Morning America averaged roughly 3.1 million.
Despite the competitive landscape, CBS leadership believes King remains central to the network’s strategy.
“There is only one Gayle King. We’re so proud that she’ll continue to call CBS home. We’re thrilled to have her on in the morning and equally excited to work with her on new, enterprising projects that bring her talents to new audiences,” said CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss.
Behind the scenes, CBS executives have also discussed expanding how King appears across the company’s platforms. That could mean new projects or additional roles beyond the morning show.
For now, Gayle King is still very much part of the CBS Mornings lineup.
