Derrick Moore is being remembered as a hero after the Georgia teacher and coach died while saving a young girl caught in a Myrtle Beach rip current. Moore, 47, entered the ocean Friday evening after seeing the child in distress. He managed to help her reach safety before the current overtook him.

The emergency unfolded near 10th Avenue South. According to WMBF News, Myrtle Beach police responded around 7:53 p.m. Moore disappeared beneath the water after the rescue, prompting a search involving local police, firefighters and the United States Coast Guard. His body was recovered the following morning near 11th Avenue South. WMBF reported that lifeguards had already gone off duty when the incident occurred.For Derrick Moore’s family and the school communities where he worked, the way he died has become inseparable from the way he lived. Atlanta News First reported that Moore taught health and physical education at Rockbridge Elementary School and previously worked at Jolly Elementary School. DeKalb County Schools described him as a “dedicated educator who cared deeply for his students and school community” who “made a meaningful impact on the students, families, colleagues, and communities he served.” Counselors were made available at both schools as students and staff processed his death.
His mother, Suzette Moore, described a man whose decision to help a stranger reflected the character his family already knew.
“He is a selfless human being and a generous person, and he will be sorely missed by the community and certainly by us as a family because we deeply love our son,” she told Atlanta News First. Moore’s family said he had never met the girl before seeing that she needed help.
That description of Derrick Moore has been echoed by the people who saw him every day. Rockbridge Elementary teacher Sherry Weeks told the outlet that Moore worked across the hall from her and was one of the first people she encountered each morning.
“Around the school, for the children, he was our hero. He did anything and everything with a smile. Never saw him upset. Always happy. Just the energetic, polite, special hero,” Weeks said.
Faith Caldwell, a tourist who witnessed what happened at the beach, connected Moore’s decision to sacrifice for someone he did not know with an act of profound faith.
“I mean, Jesus laid down his life for people he didn’t even know — and that’s how I feel that guy probably was thinking,” Caldwell told Atlanta News First. His mother added, “He had such a big heart and he actually displayed it on a regular basis.”
The girl Moore entered the water to rescue survived, although police had not publicly provided an update on her condition. Moore’s death, however, is not the first fatal incident involving powerful currents along Myrtle Beach, and history shows that some of the victims before him were also caught in danger while trying to help someone else.
In June 2022, 21-year-old Yannick Dbumeni Ndaleu of Maryland disappeared in the ocean after helping another swimmer pull his son from a rip current, according to WMBF News. Emergency crews searched near 7th Avenue North before his body later washed ashore near 54th Avenue North. The Horry County Coroner’s Office determined that he died from drowning. Like Moore, Dbumeni Ndaleu had entered a dangerous situation while another person needed help.
The danger reaches back further. In 2018, Zerihun Wolde, 41, of Silver Spring, Maryland, drowned near 9th Avenue South, only one avenue from where Derrick Moore entered the ocean eight years later. Subsequent reporting on Wolde’s case said he had been caught in a rip current. At the time of the 2018 drowning, Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue issued a no swimming advisory the following day because of an extreme longshore current.
Two years later, another rip current took the life of Franklin Morris, 52, of Jacksonville, Florida. Morris drowned near 16th Avenue North in June 2020 after being caught in a rip current. A second man, Allen Eschner, 71, died in a separate rip current drowning in the Garden City area that same day, highlighting how hazardous surf conditions can affect multiple stretches of the Grand Strand at once.
Those cases fit into a broader Carolina pattern documented by the National Weather Service. Its Wilmington office recorded 196 confirmed rip current drownings across North Carolina and South Carolina from 2000 through 2025, an average of about eight deaths each year. Half of the victims were from outside the two states, and 27 percent of the confirmed deaths since 2011 involved bystanders who entered the water while attempting to help someone else. The agency notes that the actual number of rip current related drownings could be higher because its statistics include only confirmed cases.
The National Weather Service describes rip currents as channels of water moving away from shore and warns swimmers against fighting directly against the flow. For witnesses trying to help someone in trouble, the agency recommends getting a lifeguard, calling 911 when one is unavailable and throwing the person a flotation device rather than entering the ocean without one. Those recommendations reflect the same painful reality seen repeatedly along the Carolina coast: a person attempting a rescue can quickly become another victim.
For the students, relatives and colleagues grieving Derrick Moore, however, his story is not being reduced to the current that took his life. The people who knew him have described an educator whose generosity, energy and willingness to show up for others existed long before that evening in Myrtle Beach. His final decision placed those qualities before the world in the most consequential way possible, turning the teacher his students already considered a hero into the stranger who gave his life so a child could make it back to shore.
