Gloria Govan says Draya Michele landed on Basketball Wives LA because they met her in acting class, and she compared Draya’s role on the show to Royce Reed’s.
Gloria sat down with Loop 21 right after her sister Laura Govan’s disastrous, ghetto filled interview with the same outlet. Gloria covered why she signed on for the LA spinoff and why she and Matt Barnes still aren’t married. She also answered the question everybody has been asking since the cast was announced: what is Draya doing on a show about basketball wives?
Loop 21 asked her directly, pointing out that Draya isn’t tied to any basketball player. Gloria Govan said they met Draya through acting class and that she seemed like “a real sweetheart.” Gloria admitted she didn’t really know Draya’s background. Then she said Draya kind of plays the role of Royce. She explained that the show wanted a different dynamic and more points of view on what the wives deal with.
Gloria and her sister are night and day. Laura’s interview was a mess. Gloria comes off well spoken and level headed, and she could end up a fan favorite on the LA cast.
That Royce line is the real tea, though. Royce was the one the ladies came for on Basketball Wives Miami. Saying Draya fills that seat is a polite way of saying Draya is about to catch all the hate and the drama.
The comparison doesn’t even hold up. Royce danced for the Orlando Magic and had a son with Dwight Howard, so she was connected to a baller long before the cameras showed up. Draya hasn’t been linked to anybody in particular. So why is she there? It looks like the plan is to use her checkered past as ammunition against her.
Draya better be ready, because this has fists flying, drinks being thrown and curse words written all over it. And when it gets ugly, don’t be surprised if she hops on Twitter to call the other women haters too.
Basketball Wives LA premieres on VH1 Monday, August 29 at 8 PM ET/PT.
