Grand Theft Auto VI Delayed to May 2026 as Rockstar Games Cites Need for Extra Development Time

Fans of Grand Theft Auto were dealt a devastating blow this week after learning the next installment of the game had been pushed back a full year.

Rockstar Games has officially delayed Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26th, 2026, a year after its originally planned fall 2025 release. In a statement posted to its website, the studio said it needs more time “to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” the message read. “The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”

Rockstar also reaffirmed its long-standing mission, adding, “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception.”

The delay hit parent company Take-Two hard, with shares dropping 8 percent in premarket trading after the announcement. More details may emerge during its next earnings report on May 15th.

Since the debut of the first GTA VI trailer in December 2023, little new information has surfaced, other than confirmation that the game will be set in Vice City and feature Lucia, the franchise’s first female lead, with Bonnie and Clyde-inspired themes.

Rockstar ended its message with a promise: “We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.”
