ICE Recruits Say Promised $50K Bonuses Never Came as Trump Hiring Push Backfires

A late-week court move has reopened the door for hardline immigration enforcement in Minnesota, even as officials in Maine are drawing a clear line against tactics they say went too far.

According to the Associated Press, on Wednesday, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals paused a lower court ruling that limited how immigration officers could operate during protests. The decision temporarily blocks an injunction from U.S. District Judge Kate Menendez that barred officers from using tear gas or aggressive measures against peaceful demonstrators while the case is appealed.

The ruling centers on Operation Metro Surge, a large-scale immigration enforcement push that began in the Twin Cities in early December. Government lawyers argued the injunction weakens safety, saying it harms “officers’ ability to protect themselves and the public in very dangerous circumstances.”

Minnesota remains a focal point for immigration sweeps under the Department of Homeland Security. Tensions escalated Tuesday when state and local officials opposing the operation were hit with federal grand jury subpoenas seeking records tied to enforcement resistance.

Meanwhile, in Maine, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows rejected a request from Customs and Border Protection for additional undercover license plates. Her office cited “abuses of power” tied to immigration crackdowns during the Trump administration.

“We have not revoked existing plates but have paused issuance of new plates. We want to be assured that Maine plates will not be used for lawless purposes,” Bellows said.

The moment is already rattling communities. Portland Public Schools briefly locked down two buildings this week over concerns tied to ICE activity, calling it “an understandably tense time in our community.”

Border Patrol official Greg Bovino defended enforcement efforts, saying agents’ actions are “legal, ethical, and moral.” Advocates remain skeptical, while court fights and political pressure continue to stack up.

Vice President JD Vance is expected in Minneapolis on Thursday for closed-door discussions with local leaders, signaling that this clash is far from over.
