Tony Buzbee Says Lawyer Linked to Roc Nation Is a “Pawn” Being Used by Jay-Z’s Company

Tony Buzbee is firing back hard after a December lawsuit accused him of defamation, and his response makes it clear he is not backing down.

In a newly filed court response, Buzbee asks the judge to dismiss the case or pause it entirely, arguing the lawsuit is built on what he calls false claims and manufactured outrage. The filing targets the credibility of Marcy Croft, a self-described Roc Nation-affiliated lawyer who sued Buzbee for $25 million last December in federal court in Texas. Croft’s lawsuit alleges that Buzbee and his Houston-based firm ran a social media smear campaign accusing her of crimes like illegal client solicitation, bribery, intimidation, and obstruction of justice. Her legal team claims the statements were made with actual malice and caused emotional and reputational harm. Croft previously filed a similar case in Mississippi that was later dismissed.

Buzbee’s response flips that narrative entirely. He claims Croft played a role in a broader effort tied to Roc Nation to damage his reputation, an effort he says failed. In his filing, Buzbee describes Croft as insignificant and alleges she was caught participating in a larger scheme aimed at undermining him during ongoing high-profile litigation.

“Lawyer Croft is a nobody, other than a pawn used by ROC Nation in a failed attempt to damage my reputation,” Buzbee wrote. “Her claim that anyone would target her, an insignificant and unknown lawyer from nowhere, Mississippi, is laughable. She participated in a larger conspiracy and got caught. Too bad for her. I’m going to put her out of business for her role in all of this foolishness.”

The dispute unfolds against the backdrop of multiple lawsuits involving Buzbee, Roc Nation, and Jay-Z, including a since-dropped case accusing Jay-Z and Sean Combs of a 2000 sexual assault. At the time, Jay-Z publicly blasted Buzbee, calling his actions an attempted shakedown and writing, “So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!”

Now, with both sides accusing each other of fraud and bad faith, the court will decide whether Croft’s lawsuit moves forward or collapses under the weight of Buzbee’s response.
