Bisexual men remain one of the most misunderstood groups when it comes to sexuality, and the question of whether they even exist keeps coming up. Women have far more room to be gay, straight or bisexual without anyone questioning it. Men do not get that same freedom.
Ask people “can men be bisexual” and the answer usually comes back the same way. If a man shows any interest in other men, he gets labeled gay on the spot. It does not matter that he is also attracted to women. Ask women whether they would date a bisexual man, and most say no.
The double standard is hard to miss. A bisexual woman is often seen as sexy, adventurous, even more desirable. A bisexual man is treated as either nonexistent or fully gay and in denial. Many women say they could not trust him, assuming he cannot stay loyal to one partner. Others worry about competition they feel they could never match, the idea that another man could give him something they cannot.
That fear has consequences. When male bisexuality is treated as a lie or a phase, men who are attracted to both women and men have every reason to hide it. That pressure is a big part of why the down low exists. Men keep their attractions secret because being open often means losing relationships, respect and sometimes their safety. Blaming bisexuality for the down low gets it backwards. Society built the closet, then blames the men inside it.
Meanwhile, a bisexual woman can usually love whoever she wants with little to no fallout. Same attraction, completely different reaction.
Then there is the question of whether bisexual men are selfish. Being attracted to more than one gender is not the same as wanting more than one partner. A bisexual man can be just as committed and faithful as anyone else, because loyalty comes down to the person, not the orientation.
Bisexual men are out there, and there are likely far more than most people realize. Many simply stay quiet to avoid the backlash. Until men get the same room to be honest about who they are that women already have, a lot of them will keep hiding, and the suspicion will keep feeding itself.
