Jermaine Dupri is laughing off Dame Dash’s claim that he once asked JD for Janet Jackson’s phone number while Dupri was dating her.

After Dash told the story in an interview with The Art of Dialogue, Dupri went to the comments under the outlet’s Instagram post and wrote, “What’s in that weed you smoking?” followed by a row of laughing emojis. The comment was pinned to the top of the post.
Dash had a very different version of things. When the host asked whether he had ever tried to pursue Janet, the Roc-A-Fella Records cofounder did not hesitate. “Of course. I try to get everybody,” he said, before adding, “Jermaine was hating. You still mad about that stuff up there.”
According to Dash, he had gotten Janet’s number at one point before and wanted it again. By then, Dupri was in the picture. Dash said he would see the producer around Janet but never believed the two were actually a couple.
So he went straight to the boyfriend. Dash says that when he asked Janet for her number, she sent him to Dupri, and he then asked Dupri to pass it along. JD was not having it.
“He was like chill chill,” Dash recalled. “I was like you’re not messing with her anyway. Give me the number but he wouldn’t give me the number.”

Dame Dash did not apologize for it. He did not walk any of it back. He chalked it up to his younger days, when he says he was confident in his status in the music business and in his appeal to women.
“I’m trying to get at everything. Just bottom line in the most respectful way. I was doing my big one,” he said.
He doubled down on the idea that shooting his shot was simply what a man in his position was supposed to do. “I was young. You know that’s what you’re supposed to do if you’re a heterosexual man and you’re the coolest in the world and all the women like you. What I’m supposed to do?” Dash said.
Dupri and Janet were one of the most talked about couples in music, dating from 2002 until 2009. Their relationship got a second look from fans in 2022, when Dupri admitted in Janet’s documentary that he had been unfaithful while they were together. The two have stayed cordial over the years, and fans still bring them up anytime they are spotted together.
Janet Jackson has not publicly responded to Dame Dash’s story.
