John Wall is hanging up his jersey for good. The five-time NBA All-Star made his retirement official on Tuesday through a heartfelt video posted on social media.
“Every jersey I’ve worn meant more than wins and stats,” Wall shared. “It represented something bigger.”
The 34-year-old point guard, who turns 35 next month, hasn’t played an NBA game since the 2022-2023 season. Persistent knee injuries significantly derailed his later years, limiting him to just 147 appearances since the 2017-2018 campaign. He missed two entire seasons during that stretch.
Wall’s NBA journey began when the Washington Wizards selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 Draft out of the University of Kentucky. He quickly became the face of the franchise and built a dynamic partnership with fellow guard Bradley Beal, earning five All-Star nods along the way.
After nine seasons in Washington, Wall suited up for the Houston Rockets in 2020-2021, playing in 40 games. He closed out his career with the Los Angeles Clippers, appearing in 34 games during the 2022-2023 season.
Over 647 career games, Wall posted strong numbers: 18.7 points per game on 43 percent shooting, 8.9 assists, and 4.2 rebounds in nearly 35 minutes a night.
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Wall also made a mark at All-Star Weekend by winning the 2014 Slam Dunk Contest.
His journey may have ended sooner than expected, but Wall’s impact on the game and his community is etched in NBA history.
