The comedy world witnessed a moment many thought was impossible during Kevin Hart’s Netflix roast when his long-time rival, Katt Williams, made an unexpected entrance. After nearly a decade of trading insults and public challenges, the two icons took a break from the jokes to address their complicated history in front of a live global audience.
Hart took the lead in clearing the air, dropping the comedic persona to speak directly to Williams. “Me and this man have been at odds for years on years,” Hart admitted. “You coming out here, quite the fucking surprise. But, Katt, I can sit and I can watch you, I can laugh, because I’m a fucking fan first, okay? I’m a fan first. Katt, we have an opportunity in real time, this is live television, to put our fucking beef behind us. I am offering you an olive branch of peace. I want to be a brother, I want to be a friend. Katt, I want to move on. Can we move on, man?” The tension in the room evaporated as Williams walked up and embraced Hart, signaling a formal end to a feud that has dominated headlines since 2016.
Even with the peace treaty signed, Williams didn’t miss the chance to do what he does best. When it was his turn to take the mic, he kept that same energy that made their rivalry so legendary. “Just because Kevin went to Diddy parties does not mean he did something wrong,” Williams joked, poking fun at the industry rumors surrounding Hart. “The fact that he gets all quiet when you bring it up, that means he did something wrong.” He even joked about his own shock at being on the guest list, considering he’s spent years being labeled as one of Hart’s primary “enemies.”
To close out the night, Hart reminded everyone that in the world of comedy, nothing is ever 100% serious. He flipped the script on the audience by jokingly claiming his heartfelt speech was just a performance.
“Everybody has said tonight that I can’t act,” Hart yelled to the crowd. “‘Kevin cannot act.’ What I want you to do is go back and look at that moment where I shook Katt’s hand, and I looked him in the eye, and I said, ‘I just want us to be friends.’ Some of the best fucking acting that I’ve ever did in my career. I did not mean one word of what I said. Fuck Katt Williams! Fuck Katt Williams!”
Despite the hilarious outro, the image of the two legends hugging it out suggests that the “puppet” comments and standoff challenges of the past are finally behind them.
