A Miami Gardens, Florida, man is facing kidnapping and battery allegations after Key West police say a paid hotel encounter turned violent when a woman attempted to leave.
The Key West arrest involves 52-year-old Michael Dorrell Parker, who was taken into custody during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 30, following what the Key West Police Department described as an hours-long investigation involving patrol officers and detectives. Police said the suspect was located, identified, and arrested without further incident.
According to Local 10 News, the alleged confrontation happened Saturday at the Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites on North Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West. Early reporting, including the initial account from the Miami Herald, identified Ibis Bay Beach Resort as the location. Local 10 later reported that police clarified that officers met the woman at Ibis Bay, but the alleged incident itself occurred at the Fairfield hotel.
The location correction is an important detail in the Key West arrest, but the central allegations remain consistent across the available reporting. According to Local 10, citing the Key West Police Department arrest report, the woman traveled from Fort Myers after arranging to meet Parker. Police alleged Parker paid about $1,300 for “sexual and fetish-related activities” during their meeting.
Investigators said the woman told officers that the situation became uncomfortable when Parker allegedly began making requests she considered “weird.” According to the arrest report cited by Local 10, she said Parker became “increasingly upset” when she would not participate in what she described as “weird stuff, illegal stuff,” although the report did not publicly detail what she meant by the alleged illegal requests.
The woman told investigators she then attempted to leave the hotel room, according to the Key West police report. Officer Leonardo Hernandez wrote that she alleged Parker grabbed her around the neck, forced her onto the bed, and continued applying pressure to her neck. Police said the woman claimed Parker’s actions restricted her ability to breathe and “caused her to believe she was going to die” during the confrontation.
According to the same report, the woman said she fought back by kicking Parker in the chest with her left leg in an attempt to free herself. Hernandez wrote that the woman believed the kick may have injured Parker. The officer also reported observing a bruise on Parker’s chest that appeared consistent with her description of kicking him, according to Local 10.
The woman also reportedly had visible injuries after the alleged encounter. According to the Miami Herald’s reporting, a detective documented fresh bruising around her neck and on her knees. The same report said investigators observed the bruise on Parker’s chest that the woman said resulted from her attempt to escape.
The allegations surrounding the Key West arrest did not end when Parker allegedly released his grip. According to both the Miami Herald and Local 10 accounts of the police report, the woman told investigators that Parker apologized after letting her go, saying he was “very sorry and that he had never done anything like that to anyone before.” Police said she remained afraid following the alleged assault.
Local 10 reported that the woman told police her fear influenced what happened afterward. According to Hernandez’s report, she said she continued complying with requests despite not wanting to participate because she feared for her life. That allegation became significant to investigators assessing whether she had been prevented from freely leaving the room.
Parker provided investigators with a different account of the physical confrontation. According to the Miami Herald, he acknowledged paying the woman to travel from Fort Myers to meet him for sexual activity but denied strangling or harming her. Local 10 similarly reported that police said Parker “corroborated the majority of the victim’s statements” while denying that he choked her or engaged in conduct described in the report as “forcibly restraining or falsely imprisoning the victim.”
Authorities ultimately moved forward with the Key West arrest after the investigation. Local 10 reported that the arrest report listed aggravated battery, battery by strangulation, kidnapping, and solicitation of prostitution. The official Key West Police Department statement issued August 31 summarized the allegations as aggravated battery, kidnapping, and solicitation of prostitution and confirmed that the man arrested Sunday was being held at the Monroe County Detention Center.
Publicly available booking information compiled from Monroe County records also listed Michael Dorrell Parker as booked on August 30. The booking information supports the official police timeline placing the arrest on Sunday, rather than Monday as stated in one version of the secondary reporting.
The Key West Police Department emphasized that the criminal charges are allegations. Parker is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court, and the accusations contained in the arrest report have not been established as fact through a criminal conviction.
