The red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, was nothing short of emotional as family and fans gathered to honor the King of Pop.
While speaking with Extra TV, La Toya Jackson described the atmosphere as “magical,” noting how much the outpouring of love would have meant to her brother.
“I know he’s looking down on all of us,” she shared, reflecting on the heavy legacy Michael left behind.
One of the biggest talking points of the night was the performance of Michael’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson. La Toya admitted that seeing him take on the role was a surreal experience that left her highly impressed. She noted that Jaafar’s dedication to the part was so deep that it was easy to lose track of who was actually on screen.
“What really and truly honestly impressed me was the fact that Jaafar made you believe and think that it was Mike,” she said. “You look at him and forget that he’s Jaafar. You think it’s your brother.”
The film strikes a deep chord with the family, specifically by highlighting their early days and the intense work ethic instilled by their father. La Toya didn’t hold back on how difficult it was to revisit those memories, admitting that she cried three times throughout the screening. Seeing the family story told with such accuracy brought back the reality of their upbringing and the perfectionism that drove them to global stardom.
Reflecting on Michael’s impact on pop culture, La Toya mentioned how different it is to view him as a global icon versus a brother she lived with every day. She recalled encouraging him to show the world the full extent of his talent, though he always preferred to “give a little bit at a time.”
For La Toya and the rest of the Jackson family, the film is a beautiful tribute to a man who changed the world, delivered by someone who truly understands the family bloodline.
