Lil Uzi Vert is moving a deeply personal recovery issue into court after accusing a California rehab facility employee of secretly recording part of a private treatment session and allowing the clip to make its way onto social media.
The rapper filed a lawsuit in June 2024 against Oro House Recovery Centers’ Acadia Malibu, employee Lynn Tumpa, and Tumpa’s nephew. Uzi alleges their confidential therapy session was recorded without consent while they were receiving treatment.
According to People, Lil Uzi entered the facility in February 2022 and spent several months working toward sobriety. During that time, they participated in therapy sessions. Some were individual, while others consisted of meeting with a group. Per the filing, Tumpa allegedly “secretly and illegally recorded a segment of her session with Woods.” The lawsuit further alleges that Tumpa transferred the recording with her teenage nephew before the clip later appeared on X in February 2024 and Instagram in April 2024.
The legal filing does not make clear who uploaded the video to social media. However, Uzi’s attorneys allege “Tumpa was the source and disseminated the Video online, either directly or indirectly.” That allegation sits at the center of the case because therapy is supposed to be one of the few places where a person, famous or not, can speak without wondering whether the moment will later become content.
Lil Uzi’s legal team is accusing Oro Recovery of breach of contract and negligent hiring, supervision, and retention. Oro Recovery and Tumpa are also accused of violating medical confidentiality, intrusion into private affairs, and violating privacy law tied to the alleged recording of confidential communications. Tumpa is accused of breach of fiduciary duty, while Tumpa, her nephew, and Oro Recovery are all accused of intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and invasion of privacy by public disclosure of private facts.
The lawsuit also cites the California Confidentiality of Medical Information Act, which generally bars health care providers, health care service plans, and contractors from disclosing a patient’s medical information without authorization, outside of specific legal exceptions. No court has ruled that the defendants violated the law in this case, and the claims remain allegations as the case moves forward.
Lil Uzi is seeking compensatory, punitive, and statutory damages in an amount to be determined at trial. The case recently saw a procedural win for the rapper after the defendants tried to force Uzi to sit for a deposition in California and requested monetary sanctions. Uzi’s side said in a June 9 filing that they were willing to be deposed in New York, where they live, or by video. On June 23, the Los Angeles County court declined to force Uzi to appear for a California deposition.
Uzi’s attorney, David Moreno, told PEOPLE, “The Court reached the right decision here,” adding, “We look forward to taking this case to trial.”
The alleged privacy breach hits differently because Lil Uzi has already been public about the complicated road that brought them into recovery. Years before the 2022 rehab stay cited in the lawsuit, Uzi reacted to the 2017 death of Lil Peep by speaking openly about drug use and the difficulty of stopping.
“We would love 2 stop ….. but do you really care cause we been on xanax all f**king year.” Uzi also wrote, “Rip buddy I 100% understand, and I don’t fault u.”
In another tweet from that same timeframe, Uzi described what one sober day felt like at the time: “Sober 2 day I have been shaking,” adding, “I have been cursing my love ones out and fighting. In the studio with no thoughts in my head. Teeth biting down because I just wanna be angry at something …… maybe I will just smoke weed tonight.” It was raw, uncomfortable, and very much in line with a generation of artists who were publicly wrestling with prescription drug use while fans watched in real time.
By 2023, Lil Uzi was speaking about rehab with more distance and clarity. In a 032c interview, Uzi credited Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez with helping them enter treatment.
“I didn’t want to do it, but I had to – and I can say now that it was a great thing to do,” Uzi said. “I spent seven months in rehab. The first month and a half were hard, but after that, it was easy, because the people there became my family. They showed me so many different outlets and ways to cope with life.”
That same recovery period became part of Uzi’s artistry. It was reported in 2023 that Uzi spent seven months getting sober and later addressed that process on the “Pink Tape” track “Rehab.” GQ also noted that Uzi did not give an exact timeline in that interview or specify what they entered rehab for, while other outlets connected the treatment to prior Xanax addiction.
The creative shift was just as important. In 032c, Uzi explained that sobriety opened up their approach to music. The magazine wrote that drugs previously helped Uzi “focus on one sound” and “get really good at it,” but sobriety allowed them to “focus on different things.” That context matters because Uzi’s recovery was not framed as the end of their creativity. It became part of the reason they could expand it.
That is why this lawsuit is bigger than another celebrity court headline. Lil Uzi’s recovery has already played out in pieces across interviews, lyrics, tweets, and fan conversations. But there is a major difference between an artist choosing to discuss sobriety on their own terms and someone allegedly recording a treatment session from inside a space built on confidentiality.
The entertainment industry has long treated rehab as public curiosity, especially when the person involved is a superstar. Still, treatment is not a red carpet, a livestream, or a rollout. If Uzi’s allegations are proven, the case could become a reminder that a celebrity’s fame does not erase their right to medical privacy, especially when the subject is addiction recovery.
For Lil Uzi, the court fight is not just about one viral clip; it is about whether someone can seek help, speak honestly in treatment, and trust that the room will stay closed once the session ends.
