The Marvel “Blade” movie has officially reached the end of the road for Mahershala Ali, at least as far as the actor is concerned. In a July 31 interview with GQ, Ali delivered his clearest statement yet about the long troubled project, saying, “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it.”
After seven years of development, the Oscar winner made his position even more direct by saying he has moved on and no longer considers the role part of his path.
That is a dramatic shift from the excitement surrounding Ali’s casting in 2019. During Marvel’s original San Diego Comic Con announcement, the studio brought Ali onstage at Hall H on July 20, 2019, and officially revealed that the two time Academy-Award winner would star as Blade. The surprise immediately positioned the Marvel Blade movie as one of Marvel’s most anticipated future projects, with Ali preparing to follow Wesley Snipes, whose “Blade” films helped establish the vampire hunter as a major big screen character years before the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe existed.
For a while, Marvel was not treating the movie like some distant possibility. In July 2022, Marvel announced that “Blade” would begin filming that October and open in theaters on November 3, 2023. That schedule never materialized. Bassam Tariq departed as director in September 2022, Yann Demange later took over and departed in June 2024, and Disney eventually removed the film from its release calendar. “Blade” had most recently been scheduled for November 7, 2025 before losing that date in October 2024.
The delays were not simply about finding another opening on Marvel’s calendar. The studio repeatedly struggled to settle on the movie itself. In 2025, Kevin Feige told Variety that multiple versions of the story had been developed, including period concepts, before Marvel returned its focus to a modern setting. Feige also connected the problems surrounding the movie to a period when Marvel expanded its output and, in his assessment, allowed quantity to overtake quality. His explanation was that the studio did not believe the material had reached the standard required to move into production with Ali.
By July 2026, Feige was speaking about the situation even more bluntly. During an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Feige said he felt like a “gigantic loser and failure” because Marvel never got the film off the ground with Ali. That admission matters because Marvel spent years publicly insisting that Ali remained part of the plan. As recently as 2025, Feige said the actor was still attached. Ali’s latest comments suggest that whatever possibilities Marvel may still have for Blade as a character, audiences should no longer assume his version is waiting for another release date.
Ali’s frustration also comes with a clear sense of closure. Speaking with GQ, he noted that Marvel had him under contract and had the resources to make the project happen. His conclusion was simple: “I have moved on.” The movie may have consumed years of development without putting Ali onscreen in the costume, but he does not sound interested in spending more time explaining a decision that ultimately belonged to the studio.
What makes the story more interesting is that Ali did not walk away from those years empty handed. He trained for more than a year for “Blade,” including extensive stunt and sword preparation. Tariq, who had originally been hired to direct the Marvel film, saw that training firsthand. The two ultimately reunited for “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” an original action project in which Ali plays Latif, a Muslim father and hitman whose life changes after the death of his wife. Instead of Ali’s training disappearing into an abandoned studio production, it helped shape a project that gave him and Tariq greater freedom.
Ali now seems to view that outcome as a form of creative recovery. He told GQ that the experience left him feeling “creatively redeemed,” particularly because the skills he spent months developing for “Blade” found another home. More importantly, he said he would rather pursue original work that can connect with audiences in distinctive ways than build his career around remakes. That sentiment makes his departure bigger than another casting change. Marvel spent years trying to figure out how to reinvent “Blade” for Ali. Ali eventually found a way to take the preparation, the director relationship, and the action ambitions somewhere else.
