Mississippi Man Killed by Police SUV Receives Funeral Months After Being First Buried in Common Grave Without Family’s Knowledge

Dexter Wade finally received a dignified funeral and burial in Mississippi’s capital city months after being tragically hit and killed by a police SUV.

According to reports, officers initially buried Wade’s body in a pauper’s grave without informing his family of his death.

Over 200 attendees, including U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, gathered at New Horizon International Church in Jackson for Wade’s funeral. The service occurred a day before what would have been his 38th birthday.

During the service, his mother, Bettersten Wade, told her son, “I’ll see your face again.”

Wade died on March 5 after an off-duty Jackson Police Department officer hit him with a department SUV while he was walking across Interstate 55.

So far, the officer’s identifying information has not been released.

According to the AP, Wade’s mother reported him missing a few days after she last saw him on March 5th.

By August, she learned that he had been killed and buried in a pauper’s cemetery near the Hinds County Penal Farm in Raymond.

According to attorney Ben Crump, Wade’s body was exhumed on November 13 for an independent autopsy. A wallet found in his pocket contained his ID, credit card, and health insurance card.

Crump mentioned on Monday that he’s urging the Justice Department to investigate why Jackson police and local officials didn’t notify Wade’s family about his death.

“Justice and respect go hand-in-hand,” Crump said.
