Margot Robbie is set to play figure skater Tonya Harding in a new film called “I, Tonya,” according to Deadline. The project is in the early stages and no director has been announced. Deadline reports that Robbie is working to find a filmmaker herself.
For those who need a refresher, Harding rose to national prominence in the early 1990s, winning the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and placing second at the World Championships that year. Her story took a dramatic turn in 1994 when rival Nancy Kerrigan was attacked before the U.S. Championships, an incident that became one of the most talked about sports stories of its era. Harding later pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution of the attack and was stripped of her 1994 national title. Kerrigan went on to win a silver medal at the Olympics.
Robbie is coming off her role in The Wolf of Wall Street, and this would put her in a very different kind of part. We are curious to see how the film handles a story that people still debate. For a lot of us, it was one of the biggest headlines of our childhoods, and it will be interesting to see it on the big screen.
