A strange ride share story out of Colombia made the rounds in September 2018, and Newsweek was among the outlets that reported it.
According to Newsweek, a woman identified only as Yeimy requested an Uber with another man so the two could travel to a hotel. The app reportedly showed a driver named Leonardo, so the pair did not think twice when the car pulled up. Once they got inside, the report says, the person behind the wheel was Yeimy’s husband.
The report says the husband had borrowed a friend’s car and was driving through that friend’s Uber account, something Uber does not allow.
What happened next is unclear. Local accounts passed along in the coverage differ, with some people saying the two men argued after getting out of the car, and others saying the passengers ran off. None of those versions have been independently confirmed, and the people involved were not reported to have commented publicly.
Whatever really went down, the story is a reminder that ride share accounts are not meant to be shared, and that the person picking you up is not always who the app says it is.
