LSU junior Wayde Sims, 20, was killed in a shooting near the Southern University campus in Baton Rouge early on a Friday morning in late September 2018, ESPN reports.
According to Baton Rouge police, a 20 year old suspect named Dyteon was arrested and booked on a charge of second degree murder. Authorities said investigators connected him to the scene through evidence that included a pair of glasses Sims lost during the incident, and that he admitted to the shooting after questioning. CBS News reports his bond was set at $350,000. As with any case, the charge is an accusation and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Police said the shooting followed an altercation outside a Subway restaurant. Video obtained by WBRZ shows several men fighting outside the restaurant before shots were fired and Sims fell to the ground.
Sims, a forward who stood 6 foot 6, was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead from a gunshot wound, according to Baton Rouge police.
LSU head coach Will Wade shared a statement mourning the loss. “We are all devastated,” he said, asking for prayers for Wayde, his family and the entire LSU community.
