A 65 year old Texas woman named Terry was arrested at a Bank of America branch in Galveston after she reportedly refused to wear a mask and then refused to leave, according to police and the New York Post.
Texas had lifted its statewide mask mandate, but private businesses are still free to set their own rules, and Bank of America kept a mask policy in place at its branches.
Bodycam video released by police shows officers speaking with Terry inside the bank. An officer tells her that if the bank asks her to leave, she has to leave. She answers that her money is in the bank and she plans to take it out. The officer replies that she has to follow the bank’s rules.
As the conversation continued, the officer warned that it could go “the easy way or the hard way.” Terry asked whether he planned to arrest her, and she was soon placed in handcuffs.
The New York Post reported that she resisted at first and told officers the arrest had injured her foot, so she was taken to a hospital for treatment. In the video she can be heard calling the arrest police brutality. Those were her claims in the moment, and police have not said they agree.
Terry faces charges of criminal trespass and resisting arrest. A charge is an accusation, not a conviction.
