Mathew Knowles Hits Back at Viral “Shade”: “I Was Asking for Clarity, Not Dissing Tina”

Mathew Knowles is speaking out after a leaked interview segment set social media ablaze, with many accusing him of downplaying the legacy of his former wife, Tina Knowles.

The controversy stems from an appearance on PIX11’s Kandid with Kendis, where a conversation about the origins of Destiny’s Child took an awkward turn. When host Kendis Gibson mentioned that both Mathew and Tina “earned their flowers” for the group’s success, Knowles replied with a question that immediately went viral, “What work did she put in?”

While the internet was quick to label the remark as “shade,” Knowles insists the public has it all wrong. In a follow-up with Page Six, the music mogul explained that his words were a request for specifics, not a dismissal of Tina’s impact. I didn’t know what he meant by that,” Knowles said, referring to the broad praise Gibson offered. “So I asked calmly, ‘What work did she put in?’ That was a question.” Knowles argued that by asking for clarity, he was actually opening the door to highlight Tina’s massive influence on the group’s image.

“If someone just says she did hair, and I say she also handled styling, isn’t that giving her flowers?” Knowles reasoned. He maintained that he has always been a champion of Tina’s creative vision, which famously included designing the group’s early stage costumes and overseeing their signature styling. “You can’t find a negative thing I’ve ever said about Tina,” he added, claiming that the media often tries to “bait” the former couple into a conflict that doesn’t exist.

This comes after Knowles abruptly walked out of the interview after Gibson suggested the group was a “joint effort.” Addressing the exit, Knowles alleged that the session started on a sour note because the host was late and steered the conversation toward his personal life rather than his actual project, a Destiny’s Child tribute concert. “How it starts is how it ends,” he remarked.

Despite their 2011 divorce, he made it clear that respect for the mother of his children remains paramount. “She’s my former wife,” he explained. “I give her that respect.” Knowles also revealed he is currently “evaluating all legal remedies” regarding the leaked footage and its portrayal of the conversation.
