Michael Irvin and the NFL Network may soon part ways, according to Sporting News, as his contract is set to expire before the 2016 football season.
The timing of his contract expiration is a bit off. Contracts like these are better if they expire before other networks have finalized their lineups. That way, reporters have time to switch networks if necessary. The timing in Irvin’s deal suggests to some that the NFL Hall of Famer wasn’t happy enough with NFLN’s offer to re-sign.
According to Michael Mcarthy of Sporting News, the NFLN hopes to keep Irvin around and may up the ante if they have to.
If Irvin does decide to leave though, he doesn’t have many other networks to choose from. NBC, CBS, and FOX don’t have open seats this late in the game. ESPN may be a reasonable option given his employment from 2003-2007; although he got suspended for lying about an arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia in ‘05.
