A Claiborne County, Mississippi woman has been convicted in the death of her 14 month old stepdaughter, according to WAPT News.
T’Kia was sentenced on Thursday to life without the possibility of parole. District Attorney Daniella Shorter said that because prosecutors did not seek the death penalty, life without parole was the only sentence available in a capital murder case before a circuit court judge.
Jurayah died in October 2017. During the five day trial, evidence showed the child suffered multiple blunt force injuries to her head, which caused her death, according to prosecutors.
Shorter said the injuries happened while the child was in the sole custody of T’Kia and the child’s father, Morris. His trial has been delayed to an unknown date.
Jurayah’s mother released a statement after the verdict, thanking the district attorney and the state of Mississippi for pursuing justice. She said the guilty verdict brings “a feeling of relief” to her family and is the start of their healing.
