The Houston rapper stopped by PlaqueBoyMax’s livestream, where someone in the room with Monaleo started singing a few bars of R. Kelly’s record, “World’s Greatest.” She didn’t let it slide. The “Putting Ya Dine” performer turned around and checked her friend on the spot, making it clear the moment wasn’t going to keep going with his name attached to it. Max then played a snippet of the track, which also sparked side-eye from Monaleo.Clips from the stream have been circulating since, with people online split between laughing at how fast Monaleo turned the corner and pointing out she had every right to.
Robert Sylvester Kelly, known professionally as R. Kelly, is currently serving a combined 31-year federal prison sentence out of two separate cases. In September 2021, a jury in Brooklyn convicted him of racketeering and eight counts of violating the Mann Act, a federal law against sex trafficking, after a five-week trial. Prosecutors said Kelly spent decades using his fame and a network of people around him to target girls, boys, and young women for his own sexual gratification. Testimony included details of how Kelly arranged his 1994 marriage to the late singer Aaliyah using falsified documents, when she was 15 years old, and he was an adult in his twenties. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison in June 2022.
A second federal case out of Chicago added more time. In September 2022, a jury convicted Kelly on three counts of producing child pornography and three counts of enticing a minor for sexual activity, tied to videos he made of himself abusing his then 14-year-old goddaughter. He was sentenced to 20 years on those charges in February 2023. Nineteen of those years run alongside his New York sentence, with one additional year added on top, bringing his total time behind bars to 31 years.
Kelly’s legal team has tried more than once to overturn both convictions. Appeals courts have upheld both sentences, and the Supreme Court has declined to step in. He’s currently held at a federal facility in North Carolina. Earlier this year, Kelly formally asked the Trump administration to commute his 30-year sentence. That request is still pending, with no decision announced. Under his current sentence, he isn’t eligible for release until 2046.
That’s the weight behind an R Kelly song showing up anywhere, even as a joke on a livestream. For Monaleo, checking her friend in real time wasn’t an overreaction. It was consistent with an artist who’s never been quiet about where she stands, on record or off it.
