A Chicago family is grieving after a tragedy on the city’s South Shore in early January 2020. Prosecutors say a 20 year old mother, Aleah, is responsible for the deaths of her two young sons, seven month old Ameer and two year old Johntavis, and for an attack on her grandfather, Cardel, 70, at his apartment.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times and prosecutors, Aleah was staying with her grandfather when the violence happened on a Thursday night. Prosecutors said Cardel was seriously hurt in the attack. Both boys were pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital. Cardel was reported to be in critical condition but expected to survive.
Prosecutors said Aleah also fell from the apartment building and survived. She was recovering at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She was charged with first degree murder and is expected to be held without bail once released from the hospital. A judge, Susana Ortiz, called the allegations “reflective of wanton cruelty,” the Sun-Times reported.
Speaking to reporters, Aleah’s mother, Zera, said she did not know what led to the tragedy. “I know deep inside she loved her kids,” she said. She added that she wants to remember the good times she had with her grandsons.
The charges are allegations, and Aleah has not been convicted of anything. Baller Alert sends our thoughts to the family as they cope with this loss.
