A California mother was banned from her daughter’s middle school after a video showed her confronting a class of eighth graders over alleged bullying.
Video posted this week shows the mother, Christian, standing in front of a class at Niguel Hills Middle School. In the clip she tells the students to leave her daughter alone and warns that she will fight any adults related to anyone who bullies her daughter.
According to the principal, the teacher went to get help, and school officials escorted Christian out. The Capistrano Unified School District, which oversees the school, told CBS Los Angeles that she has been banned from returning to campus. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has been asked to look into the incident, CBS reports.
Christian says her daughter was bullied by a group of boys for several months and that the harassment got worse online and on the walk home after the school told them to stop. She also says her daughter faced sexual harassment. She told reporters that the boy responsible was suspended after an investigation, but that the situation was not resolved to her satisfaction.
“Sometimes when you’ve done everything you can do the way you’re supposed to do it, and it hasn’t been resolved, then sometimes as a parent you have to decide if you’re going to go a step further and deal with any consequences,” she said. She added that her daughter confiding in her about how much it had hurt is what pushed her into what she called “Mama Bear mode.”
The story has sparked a lot of conversation about how schools handle bullying and where a parent’s frustration crosses the line. The district has said Christian’s actions in the classroom led to the ban.
