A California mother told a local news station that she drowned her three young children, according to a jailhouse interview reported by KGET 17 and ABC7.
Carrillo, 30, said in the interview, “I drowned them. I loved my kids.” She told the station she believed she was protecting them from their father. She also said she had planned to take her own life by driving off a cliff.
Authorities said the bodies of Joanna, 3, Terry, 2, and Sierra, 6 months, were found near the Los Angeles apartment of her mother. She was taken into custody the same day.
Court documents showed a bitter custody dispute between the mother and the children’s father, Erik. In court filings, Erik said he feared for the children’s safety and described her as increasingly delusional. She had made allegations against him in court, and those allegations were not proven.
At the time of the report, Carrillo had pleaded not guilty to carjacking, attempted carjacking, and auto theft charges tied to taking a car from people who stopped to help her after her vehicle got stuck. She had not yet been charged in the deaths of the children.
