Luigi Mangione Agrees To Plead Guilty To Federal Stalking Charges In UnitedHealthcare CEO Death As Lawyers Plot Their Next Move

Luigi Mangione’s federal case took a dramatic turn Friday when he officially told a judge he is prepared to plead guilty to stalking charges connected to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione told the court on August 14 that he plans to plead guilty to interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through the use of interstate facilities resulting in death. 

In court, he explained: “After years of enduring pain from a broken back, I shot Mr. Thompson, and he died. I knew what I was doing was illegal.”

His lawyer, Karen Agnifilo, said during a news conference, “He endured years of severe, debilitating pain, following a broken back, while struggling to navigate our health care and health insurance systems,” adding, “He believed that the system had failed him and destroyed his life.

The plea comes nearly two years after Thompson was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, federal prosecutors alleged that Mangione traveled to New York, tracked Thompson’s movements and positioned himself near West 54th Street before Thompson was shot on December 4, 2024. The Justice Department said Mangione was arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

The federal case once carried considerably higher stakes. According to the Associated Press, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett previously dismissed additional federal charges that could have exposed Mangione to the death penalty, leaving the stalking counts as the centerpiece of the prosecution. The remaining federal charges can still carry a possible life sentence.

Mangione is also facing a separate prosecution in New York state court. According to an official New York court decision, Justice Gregory Carro dismissed first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism and second-degree murder as a crime of terrorism in September 2025, but allowed the remaining charges, including intentional second-degree murder, to move forward.

That is where Friday’s federal development could become especially important.

Mangione’s state trial is scheduled to begin September 8. His attorneys have repeatedly challenged the prospect of federal and state prosecutions stemming from the same killing. Mangione himself addressed the issue during a February court appearance, telling a judge, “It’s the same trial twice. One plus one is two. Double jeopardy by any commonsense definition.”

New York’s own courts have already addressed part of that argument. In the September 2025 ruling, Justice Carro rejected Mangione’s double jeopardy challenge as premature because neither prosecution had yet ended in a guilty plea or reached the point where a jury had been sworn. The court specifically noted that New York law can provide broader double jeopardy protections than the federal Constitution.

New York Criminal Procedure Law Section 40.20 states that a person generally cannot be prosecuted twice for the same offense and places additional restrictions on separate prosecutions arising from the same act or criminal transaction, although the statute contains several exceptions. Any attempt to use the Luigi Mangione plea to stop the state trial will therefore depend on how the state court applies those provisions to the specific federal stalking charges and New York murder case.

The plea could also affect Mangione’s defense strategy if the state case proceeds. His lawyers previously considered an extreme emotional disturbance defense before reversing course. Such a defense could become relevant again depending on what happens after the federal case is resolved.

For now, the federal plea does not automatically erase Mangione’s New York charges. What it does is create a new legal battle that could determine whether the September murder trial proceeds as scheduled, making the next fight over double jeopardy almost as consequential as the guilty plea itself.
