Ne-Yo is speaking his truth and he isn’t holding back about the professional price he’s paid for his personal choices.
While sitting down with Brandi Cyrus on the “Sorry We’re Cyrus” podcast, the “So Sick” singer opened up about the backlash he’s faced since going public with his polyamorous lifestyle. Despite being a legendary performer who leaves it all on the stage, Ne-Yo admits that what happens in his bedroom is causing some rooms to close their doors.
“However the world is mad at the fact that I’m in a polyamorous relationship,” Ne-Yo shared during the interview. He revealed that the controversy has hit him where it hurts—his pockets. “There’s deals that I missed out on because we don’t know if we can get behind the whole polyamorous thing. It’s like, okay, what?”
For Ne-Yo, the pushback feels like a double standard, especially considering his work ethic and the respect he shows his craft. At 46, he’s grateful he isn’t “lifting boxes” for a living, but he finds the cancel culture mentality exhausting. “You can be a great person. You can show respect and appreciation but the second you do something that they don’t agree with, cancel,” he explained. “That just doesn’t make any sense to me.”
The conversation touched on why society is so quick to judge, with Brandi suggesting that people can’t get past the “sex part” of non-traditional relationships. Ne-Yo was quick to defend his household, emphasizing that everything is built on honesty and consent. “People say the dumbest stuff. It’s degrading,” Ne-Yo hit back. “I’m not lying to nobody. Everyone is here by choice. Who’s been disrespected? What are you talking about?”
Ultimately, the singer says he is done trying to please the haters who don’t understand his dynamic. While the industry might be hesitant to get behind his personal life, Ne-Yo is staying focused on his blessings and his performances, refusing to give negative energy any more of his time.
