Last week, Empire star Jussie Smollett reported being the victim of an attack in Chicago that officials were treating as a possible hate crime. Details were unclear and sometimes inconsistent at first. The actor returned to the stage over the weekend, and now, according to ABC News, a newly released police report adds more detail about what he told officers.
The Chicago Police Department released the incident report on Monday. ABC News reports that it says a friend of the actor, who is 60 years old, called police because he himself did not want to, though he reportedly believed it was in his best interest.
According to the report, officers arrived and found the actor with stained clothing and white rope around his neck. He told police the incident happened around 2 a.m., when two men shouted racial and homophobic slurs and beat him about the face using their hands, feet and teeth.
The report says the main attacker wore a black mask and that both attackers were dressed in black. He told police he could not recall other distinguishing features or which way they ran.
He also told police that rope was placed around his neck and that an unknown chemical, believed to be bleach, was poured on him. According to the report, the incident came about a week after he received hate mail at his workplace.
Police said they had gathered new footage from additional security cameras, but the attackers had not been identified at that time.
