90’s police drama, “New York Undercover” was the grittiest, most real, hip-hop inspired show on tv back in the day.
The original series starred Malik Yoba and Michael Delorenzo as two NYC undercover detectives, and was executive-produced by Andre Harrell, founder of Uptown Records.
Thanks to ABC, the show is on its way to a revival with a commitment to begin production on the pilot episode. Co-creator of the original series, Dick Wolf, will be back in charge on the set and Ben Watkins, the creator of “Hand of God,” will be the writer.
As the first police drama on American TV with two people of color in the lead roles, it opened the door for a stream of African-American and Latino guest stars, including Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Ice-T, and Giancarlo Esposito, among others. The show fit right in with the Thursday night Fox lineup, which also featured “Martin” and “Living Single,” as it aired for four seasons between ‘94-‘98.
According to TV Guide, the cast members will more than likely be completely changed if the revival gets a full series commitment, whether it goes to ABC or Fox, which Deadline reports showed interested in the series.
