NFL star Calais Campbell is mourning an unimaginable family tragedy after his mother, Nateal Campbell, was found dead inside an Atlanta townhome and his brother, Ciarre Campbell, was charged in connection with her death.
According to reports from Atlanta police and local outlets, officers responded to a welfare check at a home in Buckhead on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Police said a man at the scene “appeared to have barricaded himself inside the home” before officers detained him and later found an “unresponsive elderly female” inside. The woman was identified as 71-year-old Nateal Campbell, the mother of Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell.
Ciarre Campbell, 41, was booked into the Fulton County Jail after midnight and is facing charges that include murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife or weapon during the commission of a felony, according to jail records.
The Campbell family released a statement as the news spread across the sports world.
“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”
The death of Nateal Campbell comes as Calais Campbell was preparing for what could be the final season of a standout NFL career. The Ravens announced in May that the veteran defensive lineman had returned to Baltimore, with the deal expected to be in the $5.5 million range. The team noted that Campbell was entering his nineteenth NFL season and would turn 40 in September.
The case has drawn attention not only because of Calais Campbell’s name, but because of the way his mother was tied to his public legacy. The Charles R. Campbell Foundation lists Nateal Campbell as one of its founders alongside Calais and his siblings. The foundation says the Campbell family created the organization to continue the legacy of service left by Charles R. Campbell, the family patriarch who died in 2003.
That background makes the loss even heavier for fans who have followed Calais Campbell beyond football. In 2020, the NFL named him the 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, one of the league’s highest honors for community service and excellence on the field. The NFL noted at the time that Campbell formed the CRC Foundation with his mother and seven siblings in honor of his late father.
Police have released limited details about what led up to Nateal Campbell’s death. The Associated Press reported that arrest warrants say her throat was cut. An official cause of death had not been released as of Wednesday morning.
WSB TV also reported that Atlanta police had previously been called to the location. Lt. Christapher Butler told the station, “A brief look into the history does show some calls back in April dealing with this location a possible arson incident.” He added, “There have been some indications of possible some mental health issues with an individual.”
Ciarre Campbell’s defense attorney, Jay Abt, said that his client is entitled to due process.
“We look forward to his day in court. I’m honored to defend him and, most importantly, the Campbell family, I’m asking on their behalf that the public respect their privacy at this time,” Abt said.
For Calais Campbell, this tragedy arrives during a deeply emotional chapter. Earlier in June, he told the Ravens that he was planning for the 2026 season to be his last.
“This year, I feel as strongly as ever that this is probably going to be my last year,” Campbell said. “I said that last year and the year before. I genuinely meant it at that time, but I always tell myself to play well enough to be able to get a job again if I want to. But as of right now, I’m planning this as my last year.”
The Ravens reported that Campbell has played in 278 career games and needs five more to break the NFL record for most games played by a defensive lineman. That record is currently held by Jim Marshall. Campbell said he is not taking the milestone lightly.
“Five games, it seems so light, but it’s not,” he said. “A lot of guys who played the game of football would have loved to have played five games in the NFL.”
On the field, Calais Campbell built a career that few defensive linemen ever reach. He has been voted to six Pro Bowls, was a 2017 first team AP All Pro selection, and has 117 career sacks across 278 games, including 259 starts. His career began in 2008 with the Arizona Cardinals and has included stops with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens.
