Ziwe Put Wanda Sykes’ Very White Household Under The Microscope, Then Asked Her To Name 5 Black Friends

Wanda Sykes has joked for years that she “takes care of white people,” but Ziwe turned the comedian’s white wife, white children, and Black friendships into prime interview material.

Ziwe Put Wanda Sykes’ Very White Household Under The Microscope, Then Asked Her To Name 5 Black Friends

Ziwe sat down with Wanda Sykes and quickly found the exact pressure point that has fueled some of Sykes’ funniest material for years: she is a Black woman whose immediate household is very, very white. During the new interview, Ziwe questioned Sykes about her family and eventually challenged her to name five Black friends, turning a familiar Ziwe interrogation into one of the episode’s standout exchanges.

Sykes is married to Alex Sykes, a white French woman, and the couple shares twins Olivia and Lucas, who are also white. That family dynamic is hardly something Sykes has avoided discussing. She has made it part of her stand-up for years.

“I take care of white people,” Sykes previously joked about her household.

So when Ziwe started poking around the subject, Sykes was essentially walking directly into territory she had already mined herself.

The conversation escalated when Ziwe asked Sykes to name five Black friends. The question is a classic piece of the host’s interview arsenal. Since her “Baited” days, Ziwe has used questions about the number of Black friends a guest has to create deliberately uncomfortable conversations about race, social circles, and the strange ways people try to prove their racial awareness.

This time, however, the person in the hot seat was a Black woman.

As Sykes worked through the challenge, the exchange played less like a serious investigation of her friendships and more like two comedians seeing how far they could stretch the premise. The moment also gave new life to Sykes’ own long-running joke about the racial makeup of her household.

“I take care of white people, that’s what I do,” Sykes said during the exchange.

Ziwe was ready.

“You hear that, Miss Harriet Tubman?”

The joke hits harder with Sykes’ history attached. Years before sitting across from Ziwe, Sykes openly discussed noticing that she was the only Black person in her immediate family. In a 2019 interview with NPR’s Terry Gross, she recalled occasionally looking around when relatives or friends were visiting and thinking, “Man, there’s a lot of white people at my house right now.”

She even joked about calling a Black friend to come over when the ratio started looking especially lopsided.

Still, Sykes has also spoken seriously about what that dynamic can mean. Her 2023 Netflix special “I’m an Entertainer” included material about experiencing the racial turmoil surrounding the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery while living as the only Black person in her household.

That context is what makes Ziwe’s questioning especially sharp. She did not discover some hidden contradiction in Sykes’ life. Instead, she took something Sykes has publicly discussed for years and subjected it to the full Ziwe treatment.

The Sykes episode arrives as Ziwe brings her interview format directly to YouTube following her two-season Showtime series. She recently described the format as comedy first, with provocative questions creating the setup for guests to react, improvise, and occasionally squirm.

Sykes clearly understood the assignment.

And somewhere between the white wife, white twins, the five-Black-friends challenge, and Harriet Tubman catching a stray, Ziwe found exactly the kind of beautifully uncomfortable television her interviews were built for.
