Every grandma who ever told you to leave the house in good underwear is somewhere saying “I told you so,” because a woman named Tanisha (@tanishaevonne) ended up in surgery in her “at home drawls” and told all of Threads about it.
Her confession turned into a full blown group therapy session. Hundreds of women flooded the replies, and three camps formed fast: the ones channeling their mamas and grannies, the ones with ER stories even worse than hers, and the nurses trying to calm everybody down.
The grandma crowd showed up first, and every one of them was raised to never leave the house without good underwear. Diamond Carlesia said every grandma around the world and in heaven was collectively saying “I told you so,” adding, “We will feel the disturbance in the force in an hour.” Ashlee did her best impression of every mama at once: “Mhmm. That’s what your hardheaded tail gets for not listening. Now you out here looking crazy.” Blue Marvel warned that Tanisha’s grandma would show up in her dreams “talkin about ‘I saw on the Threads that this lady named Tanisha said I was right.'”
Others kept it short. Adaia Marie wrote, “My granny reading this post from heaven. Smh.” Caroline J. Sumlin said her mama was already saying, “see? what I tell you.” Andrea Renee announced she was sending the whole post to her daughter, “because DIDN’T WE TELL YOU!!”
Then came the women who made Tanisha’s story look tame. A user named brytania needed an emergency appendectomy at 3 a.m. and went to the ER with no underwear on at all. On the operating table, the doctor announced they were going to remove her pants and underwear. She mumbled that she did not know if there were any underwear, the doctor checked, and confirmed: “NOPE.” That is the last thing she remembers before the anesthesia kicked in.
Andrea Tebo tore her ACL after falling in the shower and could not stand up, but she still managed to get a nice pair of panties on while lying on the floor. Her reasoning was that her mama was “not about to be up in heaven with my aunties talking trash about me and my raggedy drawls.”
Another woman, who posted anonymously, was hooked up to heart monitors in the ER in the middle of heart palpitations when she remembered she had not shaved her legs in three weeks. Her worry instantly switched from her heart to what the nurse was going to think of her legs.
For some families, the good underwear rule extends to everything. Nina Echols Greenwood said her mama would not go to the hospital until they grabbed her “good” wig.
The nurses tried to talk everyone off the ledge. Carin Hoppe, an ER nurse who said she has spent 15 years in trauma, assured the thread she cannot recall a single patient’s underwear. “I hope this helps everyone,” she wrote.
