David E. Abbott Jr., a Manassas City police detective, shot and killed himself outside his home Tuesday morning as police tried to arrest him for allegedly molesting two boys he met while coaching youth hockey in Prince William County.

Ironically, according to The Washington Post, Abbott was a member of the Northern Virginia-Washington D.C. Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and was the lead investigator in a controversial teen “sexting” case last year. He also coached 13-14 year old boys in his spare time.

When police learned of Abbot’s inappropriate actions on Monday, they proceeded to act quickly. Officers learned he had sent inappropriate text messages and emails by phone and social media to a 13-year-old boy he met through the hockey program. Abbott repeatedly asked the boy for sex acts for more than two years. They then found out about a second boy who also met Abbott through the hockey program.

Police obtained a search warrant to search Abbott’s home which he shared with his mother Tuesday morning.  They also obtained four felony arrest warrants for: two counts of indecent liberties by a custodian and two counts of use of a communication device to solicit a sexual offense.

I guess guilt caught up to him before cops could. Police and Abbott had a four hour standoff before he took his own life.
