Ashley Gonzalez is officially off the force after the Houston Police Department completed a swift internal investigation into a disturbing video she posted online.
The decision to fire her came down this Friday after the department reviewed footage of Gonzalez in her vehicle unleashing a two minute long stream of racial slurs and threats directed at Black people.
City leaders were quick to distance themselves from the disgraced officer. “The Houston Police Department has terminated the employment of Ashley Gonzalez,” HPD announced on X. “As of today, she is no longer an employee of the department. HPD holds every officer to the highest standards of integrity and conduct, and will not waver in upholding these expectations.”
Gonzalez had only been with HPD since January 2024, coming to the department after serving four years in the US Marine Corps.
In the viral clip, she bragged about how “good it felt” to use slurs and warned that she would target Black individuals for arrest if she encountered them while on duty. “The amount of times I will always and forever say that I f–king hate (censored). I f–king hate you all,” Gonzalez allegedly stated in the recording.
Chief J. Noe Diaz Jr. didn’t mince words regarding the termination, calling the former officer’s actions “abhorrent, disgusting, and entirely unacceptable.” While Gonzalez was initially placed on paid leave to comply with civil service laws, the department moved to fire her the moment the legal process allowed. Mayor John Whitmire also praised the move, emphasizing that there is “zero tolerance for racism” in his administration.
Even though she has been kicked out of HPD, Gonzalez still holds a state certification as a peace officer because she has not been convicted of a crime. This technically leaves the door open for her to seek employment at other agencies, a reality that has sparked calls for legislative reform in Austin.
Retired HPD Captain Dr. Greg Fremin noted that while she is still certified, it is hard to imagine a department that would hire her after such a public and “deeply disturbing” display of hate.
