Samuel Monroe Jr., whose acting career connected him to some of the most recognizable Black films of the 1990s, has died at 52 following a lengthy battle with serious health complications.
Monroe’s mother, Joyce Patton, said the actor died around 10:24 p.m. Wednesday at a hospital. Patton also announced her son’s death on Facebook, writing, “today God called him home,” while asking for continued prayers for his family, particularly his three children.
The news comes months after his family publicly revealed that he was facing major medical problems. In April, that Monroe was on life support while battling meningitis and MRSA pneumonia. Shawna Stewart, Monroe’s wife, told the outlet at the time that he had contracted meningitis while working in Las Vegas and that his condition had gone undiagnosed for months.
The Los Angeles Times also reported on Monroe’s hospitalization and noted that the actor had built a career stretching from early television appearances to a collection of films that became staples of 1990s Black cinema.
Monroe appeared as Dion on the NBC sitcom “Out All Night,” which starred Patti LaBelle, Morris Chestnut, Vivica A. Fox and Duane Martin. IMDb lists Monroe in two episodes of the series, which aired during the 1992 and 1993 television season.
His movie résumé quickly expanded. IMDb credits Monroe as Ilena’s Cousin in the Hughes Brothers’ 1993 crime drama “Menace II Society,” the role that would remain most closely associated with his name.
But “Menace II Society” represented only one chapter of Samuel Monroe Jr.’s career. According to his IMDb filmography, he went on to play Bulldog in the 1995 horror anthology “Tales from the Hood,” Sam in the 1996 Wayans comedy “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood,” and Lorenz in the 1996 crime drama “Set It Off.”
In 1998, Monroe appeared as Junior in Ice Cube’s feature directorial debut, “The Players Club.” Monroe played the role alongside LisaRaye McCoy, Bernie Mac, Jamie Foxx, Terrence Howard and other members of the film’s ensemble.
His work also extended well beyond the movies most fans remember him for. IMDb and other filmography records list television appearances on “Murder One,” “NYPD Blue,” “Smart Guy,” “The Steve Harvey Show,” “The Lyon’s Den,” “Southland,” “Mann & Wife” and “Black Jesus.” His later film credits included “I Got the Hook Up 2,” “She Ball,” “Blood Sacrifice,” “Lockdown 2025” and “Shine Kings.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that Monroe remained active into 2023, appearing in “Packz” and “Payment Received,” showing that his career continued decades after the run of 1990s movies that first introduced him to audiences.
In the days before his death, Monroe’s family situation had also become the subject of a court dispute. According to TMZ’s reporting on court records, Patton filed a petition seeking a conservatorship over her son while questioning whether Stewart was legally married to him. In a separate report, Stewart told TMZ that she held Monroe’s power of attorney and opposed his mother taking control of his finances and personal decisions.
For audiences who grew up on “Menace II Society,” “Set It Off,” “Tales from the Hood” and “The Players Club,” Monroe leaves behind a body of work embedded in a pivotal era of Black film and television.
