Patrick Stewart Dies at 86 After Battle With Alzheimer's and Dementia

Sir Patrick Stewart, the beloved British actor best known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek” and Professor Charles Xavier in “X-Men,” has died at 86 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

Stewart passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by love and with his wife, singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell, by his side. His family announced the heartbreaking news Thursday in a statement shared through his official social media accounts.

We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” the statement read.

The announcement also offered a personal look at Stewart’s final moments, describing an atmosphere filled with family, friends, music, and heartfelt goodbyes.

“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all.”

His loved ones continued, “We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”

Patrick Stewart’s death marks the loss of one of entertainment’s most recognizable performers, whose commanding voice, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters reached audiences across generations.

Born July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England, Stewart developed an interest in acting at a young age. His journey began far from Hollywood, with theater serving as the foundation for a career that would eventually span more than six decades.

After studying at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Stewart established himself as a respected stage performer. He later spent 14 years with the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company, taking on demanding roles in productions of Shakespeare’s most celebrated works.

His classical training helped shape the presence that would eventually make him an international television star.

In 1987, Stewart became a household name when he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” The series followed the adventures of the USS Enterprise and introduced viewers to a thoughtful, disciplined captain whose leadership relied on intelligence, diplomacy, and compassion.

The show ran for seven seasons, ending in 1994, and established Stewart as one of science fiction’s defining leading men.

He later reprised the character in several “Star Trek” films before returning to the franchise decades later for the Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Picard,” which concluded in 2023.

For many viewers, Stewart’s portrayal of Picard represented a vision of leadership grounded in integrity and respect for others.

His influence expanded again in 2000 when he stepped into the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the original “X-Men” movie.

As the powerful telepath and founder of the X-Men, Stewart portrayed a mentor dedicated to protecting mutants while encouraging peaceful coexistence between humans and those with extraordinary abilities.

His portrayal became central to the franchise, appearing across multiple films alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ian McKellen’s Magneto.

Stewart’s performance in 2017’s Logan was especially memorable, presenting a vulnerable, aging version of Professor Xavier in one of the superhero franchise’s most emotional stories.

Although Patrick Stewart became internationally famous through science fiction and superhero films, his artistic accomplishments extended well beyond those franchises.

He maintained a deep connection to theater throughout his life, earning a Tony Award nomination for his performance in Macbeth on Broadway. His stage work also included productions of “Waiting for Godot” and “No Man’s Land” alongside longtime friend Ian McKellen.

In 2010, Queen Elizabeth II knighted Stewart for his contributions to drama, formally recognizing his accomplishments across stage and screen.

Away from acting, Stewart supported humanitarian causes, including efforts to assist survivors of domestic violence and displaced families. He spoke openly about witnessing domestic abuse during his childhood and used his platform to support organizations helping people experiencing similar circumstances.

His family has also chosen to honor his memory by directing attention toward Alzheimer’s research and resources for caregivers.

In a separate message accompanying the announcement, his family requested:

“In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund”

The family also named “Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources” as a second destination for memorial donations.

Alzheimer’s disease affects memory, thinking, and daily functioning, while Lewy body dementia can cause cognitive changes, movement difficulties, and fluctuations in alertness. Both conditions can place significant demands on individuals and their caregivers.

Stewart married Ozell in 2013, with McKellen officiating their wedding. He is also survived by his two children, Daniel and Sophia.

Across more than six decades, Stewart brought Shakespearean characters, futuristic leaders, and beloved superheroes to life. His performances introduced generations of audiences to stories about courage, dignity, sacrifice, and the strength of human connection.

From the bridge of the USS Enterprise to the halls of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, Sir Patrick Stewart leaves behind a remarkable body of work that will continue to be celebrated.

Rest in peace, Sir Patrick Stewart.
