After years of legal battles and public scrutiny, Pras Michel has officially begun serving his 14-year federal prison sentence tied to a sweeping illegal campaign finance scheme.
On Thursday, April 30, the former Fugees member turned himself in at a federal correctional facility in Arizona, according to Rolling Stone. The move marks a major shift in a case that has followed him since his 2023 conviction on multiple charges, including money laundering, witness tampering, and acting as an unregistered foreign agent.
His spokesperson, Erica Dumas, acknowledged the weight of the moment while signaling the fight isn’t over.
“Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice,” she said. “Pras honors the legal process as he reports to begin his sentence. The FARA-related charges that led to his conviction are being vigorously contested on appeal, and his legal team believes the record will show that his rights were violated and the truth was obscured. This chapter is difficult but it is not his final one.”
Dumas added, “He has to fight it on the inside… His appeal is in the very beginning stages.”
Prosecutors previously accused Pras of funneling funds connected to Malaysian financier Jho Low into U.S. political campaigns, including efforts tied to Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection, and later lobbying during Donald Trump’s administration.
Before reporting, Pras reportedly kept a low profile, spending time with family and briefly attending a Los Angeles concert where Lauryn Hill performed.
