For many, the women in our life are great sources of wisdom. They have seen it all, been through it all and withstood it all. One day we hope to be those mothers, aunts and grandmothers who pass on some great advice to our younger generation. I asked some of my friends, what was some great advice their mother gave them that they still use til this day and here is what they had to say. Read them below and let us know what advice your mom passed down to you.
Mama Always Said:
– “A hard head makes a soft ass” – This is one that is still relevant til this day. When you refuse to listen to warnings, don’t be surprised when the repercussions to your actions come back to bite you. It won’t be pretty.
– “If you want things done your way, do them yourself” – This one is pretty self explanatory. If you want things done the right way, your way, get out there and do it yourself. No one else will ever meet your standard like you will.
– “Always carry enough money with you to get a cab/hotel if need be” – This is great advice. Never put yourself in a situation to where you wouldn’t have transportation or a roof over your head. A smart woman (or man) must always stay prepared. Never leave the house without cab fare and hotel money.
– “Always have on fresh underwear, you never know when u might end up in the hospital” – I used to laugh at this one but as I got older, I understood. Always be presentable, even in the ER.
– “Do on to others as you’d want them to do on to you” – A bible verse loosely translated to “Karma is a b…” Simply put, how you treat someone is how you will one day be treated. Tread lightly.
– “Live your truth and no one can use it against you” – Very wise words that I think even adults need to hear. Be who you are and no one can ever debate that. So many of us struggle with OUR truth and try to be who others want us to be. Life is easier when the fronts and facades don’t exist.
– “You get what you pay for” – In a lot of cases, just because something is cheap doesn’t mean that it’s good for you. Beware of “cheap”. Sometimes “cheap” comes at a price of quality.
– “Never walk out without your keys in hand, you never know who’s waiting for you” – Women, this is a good piece of advice, something that I have used for a very long time. When you come home or you’re walking to your car, especially in the dark, ALWAYS have your keys in your hand and ready. You never know who’s lurking and you don’t want to be caught slipping while your fumbling to find keys in your purse. Keeping your keys between your fingers in the event you’re going to have to punch somebody is helpful too!
– “Say grace” – Always be thankful for what you have on your plate because somewhere someone is going without. This doesn’t just apply to food.
– “If you’ll lie you’ll cheat. If you’d cheat you’d steal. And if you’d steal got dammit you’ll kill” – Doing bad is a slippery slope and before you know it you’re in too deep. Try your best to always be a good person and keep good people around you. Never compromise your morals for anybody!
