Despite being in the Hollywood industry for over two decades and earning two Oscar nominations, he openly admits to ongoing money woes.
In a candid interview with CNN Africa, Hounsou shared his frustration.
“I’m still struggling to make a living,” the 60-year-old explained. “I’m definitely underpaid.”
Reflecting on the industry’s systemic racism, he added, “I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars because they thought that I had just come off the boat and the streets.”
Hounsou believes the entertainment world’s approach to diversity remains a work in progress.
“Systemic racism won’t change like that anytime soon,” he concluded.
In 2023, he expressed similar frustrations in an interview with The Guardian.
“I’m still struggling to try to make a dollar!” He also lamented how some colleagues, with far fewer accomplishments, had achieved financial success. “I feel cheated, tremendously cheated,” he said, reflecting on the unequal opportunities.
Hounsou received Oscar nods for his performances in “Blood Diamond” and “In America.” He has also starred in “A Quiet Place,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Amistad,” which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
