An Alabama police officer has rightfully been placed on leave after a video of her using a stun gun on a detained Black male sparked outrage.
What seemed as a skit, was actually reality. The video begins with a handcuffed man lying in the street as an officer with the Reform Police Department tells him to stand up. The female officer then escorts the man to a car where she tells him “Stay still.” The officer can be seen pushing him against the hood of the car and holding her stun gun to his back.
“I ain’t doing s—, bro,” the man, who has been identified as Micah Washington, 24, of Tuscaloosa, is captured on recording saying. “I got a gun right there.”
The officer removes the gun from his pants, while laughing and saying, “Oh yeah!”
“What you saying ‘Oh, yeah’ for?” the victim is heard asking.
At that point, the unidentified officer uses her stun gun and tells him “Shut the f— up.”
“OK, OK, OK,” he yells. “Oh, my God.”
“You want it again?” the officer asks. “Shut the f— up. You was big and bad, shut your b—- a– up.”
The recording comes to an end. It’s unclear what led to the Saturday incident or what occurred afterwards. The Reform Police Department has shared very little information regarding the issue, NBC News reported. However, Police Chief Richard Black and Mayor Melody Davis are aware of the incident and are cooperating with the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation.
“In accordance with City Policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is conducted,” the statement said.
Washington’s girlfriend, Jalexis Rice, spoke with NBC affiliate WVTM about the incident. She said watching the video made her upset. “When I seen it, I couldn’t do nothing but cry,” she told the station. “I couldn’t do nothing but cry.”
Washington has been charged with resisting arrest, obstructing governmental operations, possession of marijuana, drug trafficking and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held at the Pickens County jail on a $505,000 bond, according to jail records.
On Monday night, his loved ones and members of the community gathered near City Hall to protest the arrest and demand accountability, according to WVTM.
