At least five police officers were shot and others were injured in an hours-long standoff after a man opened fire and then barricaded himself inside a home in Buckeye, which is west of Phoenix, AZ.
The incident occurred at about 2:00 in the morning, when cops responded to a 911 call of a shooting.
The first officer who arrived on the scene was shot multiple times by the suspect as he tried to approach the home; that officer is listed in critical condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
At some point during the standoff, the gunman opened fire on a group of officers who approached the house to rescue a baby who was placed in a carrier outside the home.
“As officers went to bring that baby to safety, the suspect continued to shoot — firing and striking four other officers,” Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said at a press conference.
“At that time, our officers returned fire,” Williams explained. The suspect then proceeded to barricade himself inside the home.
The standoff ended around 7 a.m. as police sources confirmed the suspect, who has not yet been identified, was found dead in the home.
