Baller Alert Radio’s @eleven8 and @stixmalone sat down with Detroit’s very own, Royce da 5’9 during the Atlanta stop of his “Layers” tour.
This interview was a fun one. Of course we talked about his latest album, “Layers” and the standout single “Tabernacle,” but we also talked about the meaning of 5’9 and the spirituality behind it. Of course, Royce is 5 foot 9, but the numbers go far deeper. Royce began his rap career in 95. The day he met Eminem, his son was being born on the 9th floor of the hospital. His grandmother was also in the hospital, she was dying, on the 5th floor. Royce was opening up for Usher on this day, and left the hospital to finish his performance because his wife was only dilated 5cm. She couldn’t deliver the baby until she was 9cm dilated. When we wrapped up our interview, it was 59 minutes long and 1 second — 59 seconds away from being an hour long. Clearly, the man has signs all around him.
We discussed Royce being four years sober, and how swearing off alcohol has changed his writing style. We talked about why he’s become more open with his music, what’s the hold up on the next Slaughterhouse album, whether Joe Budden can go bar for bar with Drake in a rap battle, and why Royce wants to sue me for his royalties.
