Travelers visiting Tulum will soon be able to fly directly to the popular vacation spot.
According to Mexico’s President López Obrador, Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo International Airport is 44% complete.
Mexico News Daily reported that the airport will be situated approximately 27 kilometers away from the renowned beach destination. Previously, visitors had to arrive at Cancun International Airport and endure a roughly one-and-a-half-hour drive to reach Tulum.
According to a Defense Ministry (Sedena) engineer, Gustavo Vallego Suárez, who is overseeing airport construction for the ministry, there will be 13 positions for commercial aircraft that will feature precision navigation and landing systems.

The new airport is projected to have the capacity to serve 5.5 million passengers and 32,000 flights per year, with about 75% of those flights arriving internationally.
The Tulum airport will be connected to the Maya Train, which is a separate infrastructure project of President López Obrador. The Defense Ministry will run both the airport and the train
The new airport will also serve as a military base.
“In December of this year, we are going to inaugurate the Tulum airport, which is essential because the Cancún airport is saturated, with more than 700 daily flights,” the president stated on May 4.
Tulum has significantly grown over the years. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), the municipal area has increased from 7,000 inhabitants to well over 47,000 in just the last 20 years.
